Indonesian WEYANG KULIT Shadow Puppets Craft Activity | 4 Puppet Designs + Theater
Wayang kulit are intricate, flat shadow puppets from Indonesia, particularly Java and Bali, used in performances that cast shadows on a screen to tell epic stories, often from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. These figures, made from painted and carved water buffalo hide and supported by horn handles and rods, are manipulated by a single puppeteer, known as the dhalang, accompanied by a gamelan orchestra. The art form, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, holds deep cultural, moral, and ethical significance in Indonesian society.
Create four child-friendly interactive puppets based on real Wayang kulit figures as well as a functional shadow theater including step-by-step instructions.
